A Mexican lawyer who explains things in plain English.

I'm Javier Quezada, a litigation attorney in Mérida, Yucatán. I help Americans, Canadians and other foreigners buy property safely, sort out family matters, and deal with legal problems in Mexico, whether you live here or have never set foot in a Mexican courthouse.

What brings you here?

Buying or owning property

You found a house in Yucatán and want to know the title is clean before you wire anyone money. Or you already bought, and the developer, the seller or a neighbor is now a problem.

Buying property in Mexico

A family matter that crosses the border

Divorce when one of you lives abroad. Custody when your children are in Mexico. Child support that stopped arriving.

Family law across borders

Something went wrong

You were detained, sued, or served with papers you can't read. You need to know what it means and what happens next.

Legal trouble in Mexico

How working with me goes

  1. You tell me what's going on. Send a WhatsApp message or an email with the short version. I'll tell you whether it's something I handle.
  2. We have a consultation. Forty-five minutes by video call. You explain the situation, I explain how Mexican law treats it, what your options are, how long each one usually takes and what it costs. The consultation costs US$100 (US$200 for surrogacy matters, which take more specialized work), and it can be by video call or in person at my office in Mérida.
  3. You decide. If you want me to take the case, you get the fees in writing before any work starts. If you don't, you still leave knowing where you stand.
  4. I keep you posted. You hear from me when something happens, in English, without having to ask.

What you can expect

You deal with the lawyer

Not a salesperson, not a coordinator. I take the consultation and I handle the case myself. My assistants help with follow-up: delivering documents and simple filings.

I litigate

Many firms that serve foreigners in Mérida do paperwork: closings, visas, corporations. I do that too, but about 90% of my work is in court. When a deal goes bad, that matters.

No legalese, in either language

Mexican law works differently from what you know. I'll explain the differences that affect you and skip the lecture.

Fees in writing

You know the cost before you commit.

You don't have to be here

If you're outside Mexico, almost everything can be handled through a power of attorney, signed before a notary or at a Mexican consulate. I'll tell you which one your case needs and how to get it done.

About Javier

I've practiced law for 15 years. I'm licensed in Mexico (cédula profesional 6462824) and my office is in Mérida, but my cases aren't limited to Yucatán: I handle federal matters anywhere in Mexico and currently have open litigation in Mexico City, Yucatán, Quintana Roo, Guadalajara and Monterrey. I also explain Mexican law on YouTube, in Spanish and in English, because most legal problems get worse when people don't understand what's happening to them.

More about me

Questions people ask first

Do I need to travel to Mexico?

Not for the consultation, which can be by video call. For the case itself, if you're not in Mexico you'll almost always need to grant a power of attorney, before a notary or at a Mexican consulate.

How do I pay?

In US dollars or the equivalent in Mexican pesos, by Wise transfer.

Will you take a case outside Yucatán?

Yes. I handle federal cases throughout Mexico and have active litigation in Mexico City, Quintana Roo, Guadalajara and Monterrey as well as Yucatán.

I already have a Mexican lawyer and I'm not sure about the advice I'm getting. Can you review it?

Yes. A second opinion is a normal reason to book a consultation.

Is what I tell you confidential?

Yes. Lawyers in Mexico are bound by professional secrecy.

Tell me what's going on.

The short version is fine.
